Kate Moss and Topshop to end design deal

Kate Moss and Sir Philip Green The supermodel and the tycoon have had a three-year partnership. A three-year design partnership between Kate Moss and Topshop is to end later this year. When the supermodel unveils her autumn and winter range in October - it will be her 14th and last collection for the chain. Ms Moss began working with Topshop through her friendship with the firm's boss, retail tycoon Sir Philip Green. Both parties deny any rift, with Sir Philip saying the model had "other commitments". "It has been fantastic for us and fantastic for her, but [the designs] take more and more time and she cannot do this full-time any more," Sir Phillip told The Times. It is thought that Ms Moss, 36, has made at least £3m from the ranges - many of which proved popular with Topshop customers. When Ms Moss's designs were first unveiled, thousands of people queued up outside Topshop's Oxford Street flagship store, leading newspapers to dub the event "Moss mania". And Ms Moss was present alongside Sir Philip at the opening of his flagship US store in New York last year as well as its Knightsbridge outlet in west London in May. The tie-up was the first in the long line of celebrity deals, with H&M subsequently hiring Stella McCartney, Madonna and Karl Lagerfield to design for them. 'Life-cycle' David Shaw, an author and lecturer in fashion business, told the BBC that the news of the split was not a shock. "Everyone was quite surprised it lasted so long. Topshop is notorious for quick change. It brings in brands and loses brands," he said. "Celebrity brands tend to have a product life-cycle and where they go well, they go very well." He added that customers may have had a little "fatigue" with the designs. "There's very few celebrity endorsements which have lasted," he said. "It's just tiredness of an old format but Kate Moss has done well. She's still on the front page of Vogue. She's still holding her own."

not satisfied with the idea of purely inactive shoes, some designers are exploring new technology in
their designs, including flexible LEDs. designer moritz waldemeyer is no stranger to the intersection of
technology and fashion. he is a frequent collaborator with avant-garde designer hussein chalayan.
this pair of sneakers by waldemeyer was created for the sneaker brand creative recreation and uses
flexible LED panels on the exterior of the shoe. the design is left very raw with the circuitry exposed
creating a unique pattern. the other pair of illuminated shoes are by italian designer francesca
castagnacci. her approach is much more refined with high heels adorned with fire-fly like LED
fiber optics.

ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION: SOLAR DECATHLON

Fab Lab House By IAAC

The solar-powered Fab Lab House produces more energy than it consumes and has come to Madrid to participate in the sustainable architecture competition: Solar Decathlon.

The dwelling, presented by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), makes it possible to generate energy. The designers have applied currently unused technologies in order to test them for use in the near future. Vicente Guallart, Director of the IAAC, explains that ‘the objective is to foster self-sufficient buildings. In order to construct this dwelling, we used state-of-the-art digital manufacturing machine tools. We printed the house, we didn’t build it.’

The building consists of 26-m3 white pine timber parts cut digitally with lasers and assembled to produce curved and undulating forms. This organic design is conceived to create a flexible ‘parametrical’ structure adaptable to the climate of different countries and respectful towards the site and immediate surroundings. The foundations of the house raise the floor structure above ground, creating a kitchen-garden area for the occupiers to grow vegetables.

‘The form of the house responds to its energy production potential. While in the 20th century, form followed function, in the 21st, form will follow energy. Buildings must be self-sufficient,’ says Guallart. The prototype creates an indoor habitable surface area of 70 m2. The space is arranged like a loft, and can accommodate a family of four. Energy is captured thanks to a roof composed of flexible photovoltaic panels that may be moulded into a wide variety of shapes. The house has the capacity to generate 15 kilowatts, which means that the end-of-year balance will invariably be positive, as it will feed excess energy back into the network, and receive energy from the network when the climatic conditions make it impossible to produce its own.
