ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION: SOLAR DECATHLON

Fab Lab House By IAAC

The solar-powered Fab Lab House produces more energy than it consumes and has come to Madrid to participate in the sustainable architecture competition: Solar Decathlon.

The dwelling, presented by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), makes it possible to generate energy. The designers have applied currently unused technologies in order to test them for use in the near future. Vicente Guallart, Director of the IAAC, explains that ‘the objective is to foster self-sufficient buildings. In order to construct this dwelling, we used state-of-the-art digital manufacturing machine tools. We printed the house, we didn’t build it.’

The building consists of 26-m3 white pine timber parts cut digitally with lasers and assembled to produce curved and undulating forms. This organic design is conceived to create a flexible ‘parametrical’ structure adaptable to the climate of different countries and respectful towards the site and immediate surroundings. The foundations of the house raise the floor structure above ground, creating a kitchen-garden area for the occupiers to grow vegetables.

‘The form of the house responds to its energy production potential. While in the 20th century, form followed function, in the 21st, form will follow energy. Buildings must be self-sufficient,’ says Guallart. The prototype creates an indoor habitable surface area of 70 m2. The space is arranged like a loft, and can accommodate a family of four. Energy is captured thanks to a roof composed of flexible photovoltaic panels that may be moulded into a wide variety of shapes. The house has the capacity to generate 15 kilowatts, which means that the end-of-year balance will invariably be positive, as it will feed excess energy back into the network, and receive energy from the network when the climatic conditions make it impossible to produce its own.

ARCHITECTURE: PATKAU

patkau architects: fallingwater cottages

fallingwater cottages by patkau architects

earlier this month fallingwater announced patkau architects of vancouver, british columbia,
as the winner of its first-ever design competition for on-site cottages that will support
residential educational programming at the frank lloyd wright masterwork in fayette county,
pennslyvania.

patkau architects' winning design for six small, efficient, sustainable cottages will serve as
the basis of a final design, to be implemented following regulatory approval and fundraising.

‘in its subtlety, it is provocative and it carries forward the discourse about where architecture
can move,’ the jury said of the winning design. ‘its strength is not just in what is included,
but in what is left out.’

the western pennsylvania conservancy, which preserves and maintains fallingwater, will build
the cottages on the grounds of the 5,000-acre bear run nature reserve that surrounds fallingwater,
some distance from the house itself. the design competition is the first that fallingwater has
sponsored for construction of new buildings on-site.

the new cottages will serve an important outreach goal by expanding lodging capacity for
participants in fallingwater institute’s diverse educational programs. these immersive educational
offerings are tailored to broad age levels and interests – and to people from the western
pennsylvania region and beyond.

‘when edgar kaufmann, jr. entrusted fallingwater to the western pennsylvania conservancy,
he envisioned education as a critical component of fallingwater’s new role as a public resource.
he saw fallingwater as not merely available to the public, but as a force that could continue
to drive the development of architecture and good design as well as advance their appreciation
and understanding,’ said lynda waggoner, director of fallingwater and vice president of the western
pennsylvania conservancy. he said, ‘fallingwater grew and still grows.’ we feel that the winning
design by patkau architects will allow fallingwater to grow by actively demonstrating the principles
we espouse: good design in harmony with nature.’
